Facts About Gingival Diseases
What is Gingival Disease?
Gingival diseases (periodontal diseases) develop secondary to the inflammation in tissues located around teeth that support them. They are usually caused by dental plaque which permanently settles on teeth and develop secondary to bacteria.
Since they mostly do not cause pain or ache, they may not be noticed until advanced stages. Therefore, regular dentist visits are of vital importance in diagnosis and treatment of gingival diseases.
Symptoms of Gingival Diseases
- Gums that bleed easily during tooth brushing
- Redder, swollen and tender gums
- Gingival recession – gums moving away from teeth
- Loose or separated teeth
- Teeth are not properly aligned while biting
- Chronic bad breath or bad taste in mouth
Causes of Gingival Disease
Gingival disease is principally caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Unless bacterial layer, or bacterial plaque, that develops on teeth is cleaned adequately with regular brushing and use of dental floss, tartar occurs in time. Thus, bacteria reach to a larger part of tooth and gradually penetrate deeper. Fibers connecting the gingiva to the teeth weaken and periodontal pouches develop. If the disease is left untreated and progresses to the advanced stage, there is risk of involving the bones that support the tooth and losing the tooth.
What Should Be Done To Prevent Gingival Disease?
The best way to avoid gingival disease is to pay attention to oral/dental care. Also, regular dental visit enables early diagnosis and easy management of disease.
Although gingival disease can be seen in everyone, below mentioned factors remarkably increase the risk of the disease.
- Smoking
- Crooked teeth / Orthodontic problems
- Diabetes mellitus
- Pregnancy
- Poor oral/dental care
- Missing fillings/caries
